This is not an isolated incident; IMD data shows that in the last three days, Mumbai has received rainfall levels above the seasonal average, putting additional stress on the city’s already fragile drainage systems.

2. Roads and Traffic Disruptions

Persistent Mumbai rains have caused severe waterlogging across key junctions:

The Western Express Highway near Vile Parle was heavily congested.

The Andheri subway had to be closed due to water accumulation.

Areas such as Kurla, Sion, and Chembur reported knee-deep water, restricting vehicle movement.

For daily commuters, this means hours added to travel time. Emergency vehicles also face difficulty navigating waterlogged zones, raising concerns about access to medical aid during peak flooding.

3. Impact on Public Transport

Mumbai’s suburban rail network—the lifeline of the city—has been directly affected. Trains on the Central and Harbour lines are running with 10–20 minute delays. While this may appear minor, given the density of ridership, these delays disrupt thousands of schedules simultaneously, leading to overcrowding on platforms and inside compartments.

Air travel has also been hit. Airlines including IndiGo and Akasa Air issued advisories urging passengers to leave well in advance, citing traffic congestion and waterlogged access roads to Mumbai Airport.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced the closure of afternoon school shifts in the city. The decision was taken as a preventive measure against accidents and exposure to unsafe travel conditions for children.

Authorities continue to advise citizens to avoid stepping out unless necessary. Police and disaster management teams have been deployed in low-lying areas to provide assistance.

5. Reservoir Levels and Water Supply

A positive outcome of the intense Mumbai rains has been the overflowing of Tulsi Lake, one of the city’s crucial water reservoirs. This development reduces concerns about future water shortages, ensuring a more stable supply for residents in the coming months.

However, experts caution that excessive rainfall concentrated in short periods increases flood risks, even if it helps with water reserves.

6. Recurring Urban Challenge

Every monsoon season, the same issues resurface—flooded roads, delayed transport, and disruption of essential services. Experts attribute this to inadequate drainage capacity, unplanned construction, and clogged waterways. Despite repeated investments in infrastructure projects, the city remains vulnerable to heavy monsoon spells.
