The league was created by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and is currently contested by eight teams representing different cities in India.

The idea for the IPL originated in 2007 when the BCCI was looking for ways to capitalize on the growing popularity of cricket in India. The league was modelled after the successful Twenty20 leagues in England and Australia and was designed to showcase the best cricketing talent from around the world.

The debut season of the IPL began in 2008 and became an immediate success. The league attracted some of the biggest names in cricket, including Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Shane Warne. The tournament was also marked by many controversies, including accusations of match-fixing and conflicts of interest.

Despite these challenges, the IPL continued to grow in popularity, with each season featuring more matches and bigger crowds. The league also expanded to include more teams, with the addition of the Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011. However, both of these teams were eventually disbanded due to financial difficulties.

Over the years, the IPL has become one of the biggest sporting events in India, with millions of fans tuning in to watch the matches on television and online. The league has also helped to promote cricket in other countries, with several international players participating in the tournament each year.

In recent years, the IPL has also been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the 2020 season being held in the United Arab Emirates instead of India. However, the league has continued to be a major source of entertainment and excitement for cricket fans around the world.
